Marwa blues G/R part 2

Ringo looked outside, then secretly gazed at George, who was looked out the front window watching the road.

“Um… Do you have a certain destination planned out or… ?” He felt a bit awkward asking.
They were both aware of the seriousness involved in this trip, and that was hard for him to handle. George looked at Ringo for a moment, then turned his head again towards the steering-wheel before answering:

“Yeah. I don’t know if you know about the great lake around 20 minutes from here.”

“Um, where? I don’t think I know it…”

”Well, it’s in the forest, and I thought – because the sun is going down in a sec – that it would be a nice place to be. I also have something to show you.”

”Hmm? What’s that?” Ringo automatically made his eyes widen a bit. He gasped on the inside as he heard George giggling quietly:

“I’m not telling.”

“Aahh, com’on George, tell meee. Please Georgie Peorgie!” He still giggled. It made Ringo smile.

“I told you, I’m not telling… And what’s with the Georgie Peorgie now?”

“Peorgie? Peorgé, Peorgié,” Ringo replied, trying to imitate a French accent.

“Peorgié?” George smiled. Silence for a minute. Ringo gazed out the window once again, feeling an urge to ask:

“So you don’t remember?”

“Remember what?” Ringo took a deep breath, making his voice sound like that of his own, more than 35 years ago:

“I saw ye girl the other day. You know what?” George looked down, Ringo could not tell what he was thinking. Finally he replied:

“What?”

“The wiiind was blowin’.” What was he doing? There was no chance George could remember this. The headlight on the left started blinking as George made a left turn. Odd, Ringo thought; when there were no other cars around. Ringo looked at George, George looked out the window. It was then Ringo noticed the little smile upon George’s lips.

“… Blowin’ me girl?” he almost whispered.  That sentence made shivers run down Ringo’s spine. It was not an old man, he was looking at any more. It was a 21-year-old skinny lad with a guitar on his lab, “singin’ guitar blues”.

“How on earth do you remember that?”

“Haha, some is still stuck in me brain, I’ll tell you that. You remembered it too.”

“Mmm, but I’ve always thought I was the only one who could remember that one…”

“Our first US visit?”

“No, that conversation in that hotel…”

“… In Miami? No, I remember that. You and me and Paul and the luggage…”

“… And the chair we tried to pack in the suitcase… And you guitaring…”

“…Singin’ guitar blues, yeah. Being all silly with the camera on.”

“Mmmm…” It was as if the more they talked about it, the more real that hotel scene appeared inside Ringo’s mind. And not just that one. Other little memories as well. Of them together. George playing the solo live for “Til There Was You”, George telling him about his little unfinished songs, George playing cards with him and the rest of the boys,
George making even John laugh…

“…See?” Ringo’s thoughts were completely interrupted by George’s quiet voice. He looked up.

“The lake is right there, see?” Ringo followed George’s finger pointing at a great lake, slightly hidden behind the trees they were passing. It was then that Ringo truly understood why George wanted to show him this.

The water was glittering in the last sunbeams of that day, making the water look like shining diamonds were resting on the botton. No stream, no stirring, almost no movement.
It was calm and clean and very, very beautiful.

“How could I possibly overlook this – I might be wearing shades, but my eyesight is quite allright actually,” Ringo mumbled, making George giggle for the second time that evening.
George has something to show Ringo...
